PUBLIC FACILITIES DISTRICT RANKS PROJECTS

After months of deliberations, Kitsap Public Facilities District commissioners this week revealed which community projects they think most deserve millions of dollars in public funding. The consensus top pick is the South Kitsap Community Event Center, a proposed $20 million conference and event center in downtown Port Orchard.

“The takeaway from all this is that South Kitsap finished No. 1 in the ranking,” Sego said. “The expectation is that provides us the certainty that we’ll be funded. To what degree will be determined over the next month. The great news is that this community rose up. This is the second time that we’ve had more than a hundred people at a meeting. Nobody has ever come close to that at a PFD meeting.”

Port signs on as public partner

In its resolution, the commissioners stated that the Port’s status as a public partner in the project “will assist with the effort to identify and secure funding for the CEC [community events center] project, including local, state and federal grant sources, private benefactors and other appropriate sources for the funding of the project.”

The City Council has adopted a resolution that confirms the City of Port Orchard’s participation as a public partner in the proposed $20 million downtown Community Events Center project, alongside the Port of Bremerton and Kitsap County.

The plan calls for a 24,000-square-foot community center that would include 9,000 square feet for Kitsap Regional Library's Port Orchard branch and 4,000 square feet for a theater, as well as meeting rooms, a catering kitchen and restaurant.
